Why BD SUMHAC?
βUpon their diagnosis with a bleeding disorder, my promise to my children was to do everything in my power to ensure they would receive the medical care that they needed. While I knew we would face some challenges, it never occurred to me that they could be denied access to treatment of other conditions because of their bleeding disorder. When I heard the news that we lost a member of the bleeding disorders community because he was denied access to a substance use disorder facility due to his hemophilia, I knew I had to get involved. As someone who has struggled with anxiety for decades, I realize how essential mental health is to our overall well being. The thought of anyone being denied access to a mental health or substance use disorder treatment facility due to a manageable, coexisting medical condition is not just scary, but unnecessary. I therefore work with BD SUMHAC to advocate for our community and educate others.β
