Step 2: Collect Information about the Details of the Denial

These details will be important because it will help your bleeding disorders (BD) provider understand how best to advocate on your behalf. Also, in the event that state and federal agencies are engaged to advocate on your behalf with the facility, they will need this information to act.

1. What was the specific reason(s) that they gave for denying me access? (potential reasons listed below.)

  • Bleeding disorders are too medically complex.

  • They can’t manage the infusions/injections.

  • They don’t allow needles in our facility.

  • An insurance issue related to BD medication.

  • An issue related to accessing medication at the specialty pharmacy.

2. What is/are the name(s) and address(es) and phone number(s) of the facility(ies) that denied me because of my bleeding disorder?

3. Date that the denial occurred.

4. Do you have a name for a person at each facility that my BD treatment team can contact?

5. Request documentation of the denial (a letter from the facility stating the reason for the denial). While this is extremely useful, advocacy can continue even if the facility refuses to provide this letter.
